Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most often, answered honestly. If yours is not here, ask us — we answer before you are a customer too.

Before you order

Is the measurement charged?

No. The visit, the measurement and the written quote are free and commit you to nothing.

Do I need to know what I want before I call?

Not at all. Most customers start with “I want something that cuts the sun in the afternoon”. We take it from there, with samples seen in the real light of your room.

Can I see fabric samples at home?

Yes, and we recommend it. The same fabric looks different in a showroom and in your home — the light, the wall colour and the orientation all shift the shade noticeably.

Why do two quotes for the same window differ so much?

Usually because of the amount of fabric. Fullness is measured as a multiple of the width of the opening; a generous heading can need twice the fabric of a simple gather. That is why we itemise the quote, so you are comparing like with like.

Measuring and fitting

Why can't I give you the measurements myself?

You can, but you take on the risk. The drop from track to floor is rarely identical across the width of an opening, and two centimetres out shows. Because the curtain is cut to your figures, that error cannot be corrected.

Do I need to clear the room?

No. We need access to the opening; whatever is in front of it we move and put back.

Will you drill into the wall or the frame?

Usually yes — the fixing goes into the wall, the ceiling or the frame, depending on the weight and the solution. In some cases there are tension mechanisms that need no holes, but they will not carry heavy fabrics.

I'm renting. Is it worth it?

Yes. There are solutions with minimal or no intervention, and systems that come down and move with you. Tell us at the start so we can allow for it in the design.

Choosing a solution

Curtain or roller blind?

A curtain gives warmth, better acoustics and a far wider aesthetic range. A roller takes almost no space, cleans more easily and gives a cleaner line. In many homes the right answer differs from room to room.

What does a double curtain mean?

A sheer in front and a décor or blackout fabric behind, on a double track. In the morning you draw only the sheer and have light with privacy; at night you close the second layer. It needs depth allowed for in the curtain recess.

What does a bedroom need?

Blackout, and not only in the fabric. Light also comes through the gaps around the shading, so the fitting matters: outside the reveal, with a closed cassette or side channels.

What suits an office with screens?

A screen roller. It cuts glare without darkening the room and without losing the view. The openness factor is chosen from the orientation of the opening.

Care and afterwards

How are they cleaned?

Most curtain fabrics wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle without softener; linen and some décor weights need dry cleaning. Rollers and venetians are cleaned in place with a cloth or a brush. Always follow the label.

Do they fade in the sun?

Over time, yes — ultraviolet light weakens the fibres. A sheer in front of the main fabric acts as a filter and extends its life noticeably.

If something breaks, do you fix it?

Yes, and we do not need to have installed it. Most faults are runners, cords or mechanisms, all replaceable without changing the whole system.

Can I change just the fabric?

Often yes. If the mechanism is in good condition and the fabric has worn, only the fabric changes — considerably cheaper than a new system.
