Wooden venetian blinds in a living room with a sofa

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds do something no fabric can: they tilt. Instead of choosing between open and closed, you set the angle of the slats and aim the light at the ceiling or the floor, while keeping your privacy.

Aluminium or wood

Aluminium is light, tolerates damp and cleans easily. It is the practical choice for kitchens, bathrooms and commercial spaces.

Wood gives warmth and substance, but it is heavier and does not like sustained humidity. On very wide openings its weight becomes a factor, and we account for it in the design.

Slat width changes the character

Narrow slats give a more discreet, technical result and close more tightly. Wide slats leave more of the view when open and read as more architectural, but they stack into a deeper bundle at the top.

On a short opening, that stack of wide slats can hide a noticeable part of the glass. It is one of the things only an on-site measurement reveals.

Where they work, and where they do not

They work wherever you want precise directional control: offices, rooms with screens, rooms with strong side light. They also work where there is no depth for fabric.

They are not the best choice in a bedroom where you want full darkness — even closed, venetians leave fine lines of light. Nor in dusty spaces, because every slat is cleaned separately.

Cleaning

Dust them with the slats closed, using a microfibre cloth or a purpose-made brush, on both sides. Aluminium tolerates a slightly damp cloth; wood should be cleaned dry only, because moisture warps it over time.

Frequently asked questions

Do venetian blinds rattle in a draught?

At an open window, yes. Bottom weights and side channels reduce it noticeably — worth discussing if the opening sits somewhere with a through-draught.

How long do they last?

The tilt mechanism is the part that takes the strain. With reasonable use they last for years; the most common failure is the cord or the mechanism, and both are replaced without changing the whole blind.

Can they be fitted to a door that opens?

Yes, fixed to the frame and with side channels so they do not swing when the door moves.
