Roman & Pleated Blinds

Roman and pleated blinds solve the same problem from two directions: you want the texture and warmth of a fabric, but you do not have the space, or the appetite, for a curtain that stacks to the side.

How a roman blind works

The fabric rises by gathering into horizontal folds, one above the other. Closed, it reads as a flat panel; open, as a tidy stack at the top of the opening.

Because the fabric stays visible across its whole surface, its quality and the way it hangs matter more than they would on a gathered curtain. Linen or a fabric with body gives clean folds; something very light gives irregular ones.

Pleated and cellular

A pleated blind is permanently creased fabric in a fine concertina fold that stacks into a very small bundle. Cellular is its development: two layers forming honeycomb cells with air trapped between them.

That trapped air acts as insulation. In a room with strong sun, or on single glazing, the difference in temperature is noticeable — and it feeds directly into how hard the air conditioning has to work.

Where they suit

On small and medium openings where a curtain would take too much space. On kitchen or bathroom windows where you want fabric but not down to the floor. And in rooms where you want the opening to stay architecturally clean.

On very wide openings the stack becomes heavy and bulky; there we usually suggest a roller or a curtain instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a roman blind and a roller?

Both move vertically. A roller winds onto a tube and reads as technical; a roman gathers into fabric folds and reads warmer, closer to a curtain.

Can they be cleaned?

A roman blind lifts off its mechanism and is cleaned according to its fabric — often dry cleaning. A pleated blind is dusted, and light marks are treated locally.

Do they genuinely help with insulation?

Cellular does, measurably, because it traps air. A plain roman offers some insulation from the mass of the fabric, but not to the same degree.
