Maintenance

Looking after your curtains in the Cypriot climate

Sun, salt and dust — what actually decides how long your fabrics last.

Curtains in Cyprus work under conditions you do not meet in milder climates: long hours of strong sun, dust, and in coastal areas salt that settles into the fibres. With a little care, the difference in lifespan is measured in years.

Dust is the first problem

Before you even think about washing, dust them. A vacuum on a low setting every few weeks stops dust bonding with the fibres. Once dust has settled in, it takes a more aggressive wash — and the aggressive wash is what ruins fabrics.

The sun works slowly but steadily

Ultraviolet light fades and weakens fibres. You do not notice it month to month; you notice it when you change the curtain and compare. A sheer in front of the main fabric is not only an aesthetic choice — it acts as a filter and extends the life of the fabric behind it.

Washing: read the label, not the habit

Most modern curtain fabrics wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle, without softener and without a high-speed spin. Linen and some décor weights need dry cleaning. If you are unsure, do not gamble: one wrong wash can shrink a curtain enough that it no longer reaches the floor.

Hang them damp

The most useful trick: put the curtains back on the track while they are still slightly damp. Their own weight straightens them as they dry, and they usually need no ironing at all.

The mechanisms need attention too

A track full of dust binds, and when it binds the user pulls harder — which is how runners break. Cleaning the track once a year takes a few minutes and prevents most faults.
