Motorised shading: is it worth the investment?

When an electric mechanism pays for itself, and what the installation needs.

Motorised shading costs noticeably more than manual. In some cases it is money wasted; in others it is the only solution that works in practice. The difference is clearer than it looks.

When it genuinely pays

High or hard-to-reach openings are the clearest case: if you need a ladder to reach the curtain, in practice you will never move it. The same is true of very large, heavy openings, where pulling by hand strains the mechanism. And for people with limited mobility, an electric mechanism is not a luxury but accessibility.

When it does not

In a bedroom with an ordinary window you open and close comfortably by hand, a motor adds cost and one more thing that can break, without solving any problem.

What the installation needs

The most important thing is to decide early. Electric mechanisms need power near the opening — ideally a socket inside the recessed curtain box. Allow for it during first fix and the cost is trivial. Think of it after the walls are painted and it means chasing and making good. There are also battery mechanisms that avoid the wiring, at the cost of a charge every few months.

Smart control

Beyond the handset, most modern mechanisms connect to a phone app or a smart home system, so the shading closes at a scheduled time. In a Cypriot summer that has practical value too: closing automatically through the peak hours keeps the room cooler and the air conditioning works less.

Our advice

Do not motorise everything. Pick the openings where the manual option genuinely gets in your way and leave the rest by hand. The result is almost the same convenience at a significantly lower cost.
